The VISUAL ARTS program at South Miami K-8 Center’s Expressive Arts Center, offers students who are talented in art an opportunity to receive highly specialized instruction in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpting, textiles, photography, aesthetics and art history.

Students produce art in a studio environment specifically designed for their needs, using professional, up-to-date equipment. A fully equipped photographic darkroom is also available. An adjoining patio and gardens provide space needed for sculpture and large painting, as well as for observation of the outdoors.

Throughout the year, field trips and visiting artists give students valuable exposure to the natural environment, museums, galleries, and to the local art community.

Students applying for admission to the Visual Arts Talent Program should prepare a portfolio consisting of the five best examples of their artwork, representing as many different media as possible. The screening/audition process includes an observation, imagination, and visual memory test. Previous formal instruction in art is not required. Students interested in applying may visit the school’s website at http://smk8.dadeschools.net , From this website, print the art  magnet recommendation form. In addition, you must also complete the magnet application online at: http://choice.dadeschools.net .
